Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Official ECI FAQ reference directory for citizens

Q1. What are the main categories of electors in India?

There are three main categories of electors: (1) General Electors (ordinary residents in India), (2) Overseas (NRI) Electors (Indian citizens living abroad who haven't acquired foreign citizenship), and (3) Service Electors (members of Armed Forces, armed police forces, or government employees posted abroad).

Q2. What is the relevant date for determining the age of 18 years? Can I get myself registered as a voter on the day when I have completed 18 years of age?

There are now four qualifying dates in a year: January 1st, April 1st, July 1st, and October 1st. If you turn 18 on or before any of these dates, you can apply. You can also submit advance claims during revision campaigns before you turn 18 so that you are registered in the subsequent quarter.

Q3. Can a non-citizen of India become a voter in the electoral rolls in India?

No. A person who is not a citizen of India cannot be registered as a voter in the electoral rolls of India.

Q4. Can a non-resident Indian (NRI) settled in a foreign land become an elector of electoral roll in India?

Yes. An Indian citizen residing abroad who has not acquired the citizenship of any other country and is of 18 years of age can register as an Overseas Elector by filing Form 6A online.

Q5. I am a student staying at the place of study in a hostel / mess far from my native place. What should I do to get registered?

A student has the option to register either at their parents' residential address (as their ordinary residence) or at their hostel/study address. To register at the hostel address, you must submit a student declaration form along with Form 6.

Q6. Where can the list of claims and objections be seen?

The list is published on the notice board of the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) of the constituency, on the website of the respective State Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), and in draft rolls.

Q7. How will an applicant know that his/her name is included in the electoral roll?

You will receive an SMS alert if you provided your mobile number. You can also search your name online at the voters.eci.gov.in portal or check with your local Booth Level Officer (BLO).

Q8. How can corrections be made if there are some mistakes in the entries in the electoral roll pertaining to electors?

For correction of entries, you must submit Form 8 online on the ECI portal or Voter Helpline app along with valid supporting proof documents.

Q9. I have shifted from my residence where I am registered as an elector to some other place. How do I ensure that I am enrolled in my new place of residence?

You must submit Form 8 for shifting of residence. This will automatically transfer your voter record to the new constituency/address and delete it from the old one.

Q10. I have shifted my residence recently. I have an EPIC with the old address. Can I get a new EPIC for the present address?

Yes. Once your Form 8 application for shifting of residence is approved, you will be issued a new replacement EPIC with the updated address.

Q11. My EPIC has some errors. What is the procedure to have a new EPIC with correct particulars?

File Form 8 online for correction of entries. Upload correct supporting documents. Once approved, a corrected voter card will be dispatched to you.

Q12. I have lost my old EPIC. How can I get a new EPIC?

You can apply for a replacement EPIC by filing Form 8. You will need to select the option for replacement without correction, choose the reason (e.g., lost or destroyed), and upload a copy of the police report/FIR if it was lost.

Q13. Who can object to the inclusion of names in electoral rolls?

Any person whose name is already registered in the electoral roll of that constituency can object to the inclusion of any name by filing Form 7.

Q14. Is it mandatory to provide the Aadhaar details in the registration forms?

Q15. I am a tenant and my landlord does not want me to get enrolled. How can I get enrolled as a voter?
