Who is Eligible to Register as a New Voter?
According to the constitutional framework of India and the Representation of the People Act, every citizen who meets the following criteria is eligible to get enrolled in the electoral list:
- Nationality: The applicant must be a citizen of India.
- Age: Must have reached the age of 18 years on the qualifying date of the revision cycle. If you are completing 18 by the upcoming revision draft (such as January 1, April 1, July 1, or October 1), you are permitted to submit applications in advance.
- Residency: Must be ordinarily resident in the constituency of enrollment. This refers to the place where you normally reside, even if you are temporarily away for work or education.
- Disqualification: Must not be of unsound mind or disqualified from voting due to corrupt practices or electoral offenses.
Documents Required for Form 6
Before filling out the Form 6 application on the official ECI site, ensure you have clear scanned copies of the following documents ready for upload (PDF or JPEG format, size under 2MB):
1. Proof of Age (Any One):
- Aadhaar Card (Highly Recommended)
- PAN Card (Income Tax department)
- Indian Passport
- Driving License
- Birth Certificate (Issued by Municipal authority)
- Class 10 or Class 12 School Certificate
2. Proof of Address / Ordinary Residence (Any One):
- Recent water bill, electricity bill, or piped gas connection invoice (not older than 1 year)
- Aadhaar Card showing local address
- Passbook of nationalized banks or post office
- Indian Passport
- Registered Rent Agreement or Sale Deed in the applicant's name
3. Photograph:

- On the official `voters.eci.gov.in` page, sign in. If you are a new user, click "Sign Up" and register with your mobile number.
- Locate the card "New Voter Registration" and click "Fill Form 6".
- Enter your state, district, assembly constituency, and relative details.
